Where did you learn to tie? - a quest for knowledge

I'm curious how everyone learned to tie knots? Did you great gram-pappy teach you when you were knee high to a grasshopper? Did you read a book? The intra-webs? Or are you just fumbling through this hoping to good-ness-gracious that weird mess of a knot you made-up isn't going to drop you while you are sleeping tonight?

Personally, I've read some internet instructions, fumbled through some of this and I've used some basic knots I know from climbing. I know none of the names of any knots, but it sure is fun to learn.

This is more just a general question for people rather than me asking advice. Stories are fun!

I had the good fortune of havin a fantastic teach in gym class in high-school that spent a semester teaching all kinds of climbing knots. Including tying harnesses out of webbing and climbing with larkshead loops

Only useful class I ever had

Ive been a scout leader for 10 years, I decided to mentor the pioneering merit badge for the guys, but had to learn it all before I taught. I gotta tell you, nothing better that seing a bunch of guys climbing over a rope bridge they built themselves!

Youtube and searching the internet. I also got some books from the library, but I found I only use about 10 knots. So, once I figured that out I just practiced and practiced until I got them all in my head and was good to go.

My dad was in the US Coast Guard and he taught me a few knots when I was a kid -- like the trucker's hitch. I also grew up in a rural, farming town, where basic knots are handy to know. In college, I found "the" book of knots -- "The Ashley Book Of Knots" -- which I still have and reference quite a bit. I got the book so I could learn decorative knots for the period costumes I was working on at the time. Awesome resource.

Now'a'days, I use the internet a lot. It's become a fantastic place to brush up on various knots that my wee brain has forgotten.

    Fun post!!
