    SuperFly Pole Mod

Well I have been thinking about doing this mod for quite sometime now, and with the wife's help it is now a reality. Pretty much we made 2 small pouches and attached them in the middle of the tarp on the bottom seam. I cannibalized an old tent and used one if its fiberglass poles. It took a little tweaking but it was not too bad.

I ran a ridge line under the tarp and the pole simply ties off to a prusik knot on the ridgeline.

What it does for this tarp is eliminates the need for the pullouts in mild to moderate winds. If a big storm is rolling in you might have to tie them out. I believe in the conditions I tested it in that the pole did much better than the pullouts would have done. The space it adds around the hammock is incredible. Hopefully you can see it in the pictures.

I had heard of many people trying this, but not too many on the superfly. So here's the proof it can be done, and basically for free.

What did you use inside to brace the poles against? My main concern would be abrasion from wind moving the poles around. I do like the idea-just curious as to what you used inside to prevent the pole from punching through the tarp.

Inside the pocket I uses a piece of an old weedeater strap, a thick black webbing, folded it in half and sewed it like a pocket. I stuck that inside the poly-pocket that was sewn on to the tarp. The pole end goes in it and does not come in contact with the poly-pocket.

The only other part I am concerned about is the metal sleeves that connect the poles. My idea there is to stick the soft side of Velcro around the metal ends. It would not interfere with the poles being inserted together, and it would keep the metal off the tarp. Not sure if I will do that or not. It did not seem to be an issue when I was testing it.

Heres another picture showing the pockets a little better

Yep they do. I got some of my ideas from there. We picked up done ripstop nylon from walmart, going to make a sleeve for the pole to keep it from wearing on the tarp. I don't think it is needed, but I don't want to take any chances.

I really love how this has turned out. This forum has been a huge help to me, I'm just trying to give back.

    Good job!
For those who have bridge hammocks, pole pockets can be added at the ends of the tarp, instead of the center, and intersect with the spreader bar locations.

Sweet. Order your tarp from Brandon and have him ship it straight to 2qZq for the mod.

I have got to get me one of those new camo Superflys!
