Man, I HATE to read that! Just trying to enjoy the creation, and a tree or a branch kills you!
I'd like to see statistics on where tree danger rates compared to bears, snakes, lightning etc. Probably drowning is WAY ahead, but then again WAY more people swim or boat or wade than sleep under trees.
Sad. Reminds me of the people who die from hantavirus (I think that's it) because they happened to pitch a tent over some mouse poop
When it seems like the night will last forever
And there's nothing left to do but count the years
When the strings of my heart start to sever
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And dream me a dream of my own

I almost went there to camp the same night
Agreed, on all counts. A quick check of some statistics also shows that your 3-4 times more likely to die from a fall or poison (about 12,000-14,000 deaths annually in US) than drowning (~3500 annually). Deaths like the above post are, by comparison, extremely rare.
It is hantavirus & that sh!t is nasty. Because of animal reservoirs/host-range this is problem is mostly confined to western/southwestern states. Although normal disease is not very pleasant, the vast majority of hantavirus infections thankfully are not fatal.
That's really going to be a sad memory of Memorial Day weekend for her family.
As far as Haunta, I know it's not supposed to be in the southeast (just like Lyme Disease ) but nothing would run me out of an AT shelter faster than someone whipping up a cloud of dust with a broom in the big "mouse house".

...and there came to be a day, all too soon, that I became aware that I could travel no more on my long journey. Though I did not arrive where I had planned, I believe that here is exactly where I am supposed to be...
All care should be taken of course, and condolences to the family, but it wouldn't be news unless it almost never happens.
