    Protect/lock a hammock?

Hey guys so at a festival i was at last weekend i left my hammock in the trees overnight....and of course someone had to steal it.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to lock/protect the hammock or maybe know of like an actual LOCK carabiner, not just one that screws to "lock"?

I had an Grand Trunk parachute type hammock, it was only like 40 bucks but with those regular carabiners it was just two clips and the hammock is gone.

Normally at festivals i like to leave my hammock to "reserve" my spot, and haven't had any issues until now...

I know they could just cut the cords but that means they need a knife and had to have preplanned the theft....i think someone just walking by and saw nobody there decided to steal it...ugh. Any ideas? Besides sleeping in it lol

    Thanks!

You might be able to use something like this: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/3...ner-Large.html

Though I wouldn't hang your weight off of it, I'd use it as a supplement to your existing biners, maybe even just on one side. Probably not super secure, but as one of my coworkers would say "It'll keep an honest man honest"

Master locks placed with biners would be my first thought.

imho... it would be difficult to secure a hammock.
we use materials that can be cut easily with a sharp knife or scissors.

Get a big steamy pile of dog poo and put it on some plastic in your hammock. Bet they won't touch it then! Though there are drawbacks to that idea, you will still have your hammock.

Look on the bright side, good excuse to get that new one you have been eyeballing anyway.

Take your hammock with you but leave a Biohazard warning sign attached to your spot.

I have some doubts like this when I camp in a crowded place. I just prefer to say close by or a keep a big tarp up and covering it to make people not come close to look under it. or if im going on a hike I take the hammock down. but I know it would be too easy to just cut the cords and take it. im sorry that happened to you man.
Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

get a GT UL for 20 bucks or make a crap DIY one for uber cheap and use it as your spot saver hammock.. if you lose it, who cares and if not just put up your nice one when you get back. You said this is the first time and you usually don't have a problem, so instead of being out 40 you could save it and be prepared to be out 5-20.. if you're really devious like myself, on your space saver you could cut a couple slits by the top (since this isn't a hammock inteaded to use, just look like a hammock and save your spot) so if they DO steal it, at least karma has some cash in the bank to pay back to them. just a thought.

When I hear a story like this (which just gets my blood boiling), my first thought is tiger pits and pungi sticks, shotguns and tripwires, Malay man-catchers and etc, etc. Each of them have their merits, but each will also get you sent to jail.

Maybe a less aggressive approach would be a dummy hanger (kind of like the kind you made out of pillows to fool mom into thinking you were still at home, when really you were out walking around with your buddies).

The tripwire might still work, but just rig a bunch of camp gear to fall and make a bunch of noise--might scare 'em away.

Maybe a government sponsored program that instills honesty in individuals at an early age, thus eradicating the need to take such preventative measures? I know, I know--who in the government would be qualified to teach honesty?
You're gonna need a bigger hammock
