Since the hammock is not for hiking use so weight doesn't matter here's my idea - if you had access to a swagger tool you could run some 1/16" aircraft cable through the gathered ends, swag them, then give yourself like 20' that could be looped around the trees and padlocked. Basically your hammock would end up looking like it had two sets of suspension lines on it - the rope you hang from and the cable you lock it up with.

Take a 1/4 or 1/8 aircraft cable with loops on both ends. Loop it around to two trees where you plan to hang. Secure with padlocks. Set up your hammock when you return.
Police tape might be a good deterrent.
If you must leave gear there, get a locking stuff sack from Pacsafe.see it here

Lol at the doggie doo idea!

Oh yeah... After seeing a news story on bike thefts, I'm wondering how well a cable would work. Some of these thieves are carrying wire cutters.

Leave the mean pitbull in the hammock. That way, if an attempt is made to steal the hammock, he drops on the ground, making him very mad, especially if he were napping!

Go for a deterrent....How about some streak stained briefs dangling over the ridgeline? Nothing says they can't be stained with chocolate syrup so long as they look authentic. They both attract flies just the same

I have an old REI 1/2 Dome that I use as a "place saver" when I car camp in a public area (which I try to avoid at all cost) and will be gone day hiking. I've just never been keen on leaving my hammock when I'm not around. And since I don't use the tent anymore, and it's old, I don't have to worry

Rotweiller chained to tree under hammock! Or a pair of Dobermans with one tied to each tree.

Attack dogs and claymores aside. Instead of using a carabiner, use a padlock. A big nice heavy padlock on each end to hold it together. So unless they were willing to start cutting stuff, they would probably leave it alone. Since this is a festival and not a hiking trip, the weight of the locks wouldn't really matter.

that sucks. As someone who has made all his gear (or won it ), I would be extra pissed if someone stole my stuff. I usually just use public areas on the Mahha or other group hangs and almost everyone else has "better" equipment than me, so I've never worried about it. Something to think about....

That's just...awful. Sorry to hear of your random run-in with the worst of human nature, tripflex. I always considered festival types to be the least sub-humanoid of our species. A bad apple, indeed. Rotten, stinking apple.

Thinking of introducing my TSA luggage locks somewhere into the suspension equation for when I'm oot and aboot, wrangling fish or whatnot. An ounce of prevention, pound of deterrent ya know? (And no, Knotty, not in any kind of load bearing capacity!)
