    Very nice presentation!

So it looks to me like, except maybe on the very ends, you don't get near as much extra coverage going from 10 feet to 12 feet as you might think. What you get instead is extra head room with equal or slightly better coverage. Hmmm! Never would have thunk it.

However, there is another variable: hammock length. Would a longer hammock get more benefit and overall coverage from the longer tarp, due to being able to clear the tarp better? For example, my HH Safari has a 112" RL. Compared to 96" in your example. So, an extra 16" of hammock before the suspension heads up towards the tarp, allowing the 12 foot tarp to be hung lower( either hex or diamond) than with a shorter hammock? Of course, that hammock would also NEED more coverage on the ends, but a lower tarp would allow better side coverage, I suppose.

Or what about this variable: an 11 foot RL by 10 ft wide RECTANGULAR tarp, like the JRB? How might that compare to the hex tarps?

Handy dandy program you have there!

You can definitely get more coverage by making the sides longer. Take that idea to the extreme and you get a rectangular tarp. The downside is more weight and maybe a less taut pitch.

By the way, I just eyeballed the side lengths in the graphic.

Long hammocks can use/need long tarps with less clearance.

Great illustrations Knotty! Confirms in my mind why I've always liked hex tarps. A tad more weight and a couple of more guy lines but worth it for the coverage IMO.

it is a helpful illustration, however...... Both my Noah 9' and my Gargoyle 9' actually have a 12.7' ridgeline. In fact, I can hang my Noah 9' as a hex by using the tie-outs one level up from the corner.
Diamonds do have some "waste", but it sure is nice just to use two stakes and be done.
I do tend to use my diamonds when it's warmer though. Once it looks nastier, I go with my JRB Winter tarp.

Look at diamond tarps you need to look at asym diamonds as well as they offer coverage on the direction you are laying. Just a thought.

I think the only part I didn't hit on was trying co compare the 11x10 rectangular to the hex. Reason being is that I'm only estimating what the sides look like in terms of how far they project down when actually they're pulled out at an angle from the ridgeline. Would have to use a 3D modeling program or do some math to figure it out. Maybe someone who knows how to use Google Sketchup could give us some more accurate models.

True, but more complicated than I wanted to get into.

That's because he's being reused from an earlier illustration I created to show what effect raising the foot end has on moving the hanger's center of gravity. Seems a little silly in this context.
