I have a Hennessy with a diamond trap. Didn't like how it made me feel like I was just out in the open. So I got the Hex Fly and even though it's a bit heavier it provides a lot more coverage, wind protection and in porch mode I have a lot of room under.

When weather is fair or there might be only a little rain, I like the openess of hanging in diamond. Depending on the size and weather severity, the diamond can still give plenty of coverage because it gets narrower as it moves away from you. You can get slightly better coverage by pulling the guys farther out. But, there's no doubt I get better protection in A-frame or hex. I like a tarp that gives me the option depending on conditions.

Fellas. I have tuned in to your discussion and it is quite interesting and informative, but one problem I have experienced from time to time is having to hang from trees that were to close together and the tarp was to long to extend it's full length. Sometimes that's the only option, hanging between two trees to close together, especially when it's beginning to get dark and you are in the area that is where you want to settle for the night or longer, like when trout fishing. I have an Old Man Winter, The longer Clark for The North American and some older Hennessy tarps, but often I have the longer tarp. I'm wondering if anyone has experimented a way to rolling-up one or both ends of the tarp to compensate for this problem?

I've only ever ran in to that situation once. I tied a overhand knot in both ends to shorten the length and still be able to use the tieouts. i wasnt able to get the tarp as taught as usual, but i was dry when it rained.

i dont think i would want to do that too often out of fear of damaging the tarp and there may be a slicker solution, but it worked. I've also heard of people sticking a round stone or small river rock, something without sharp edges, in the tarp and then marlin spike or clover around it. there's a video somewhere that shows it better than i can explain it. i'll try to find it

Thanks SpitballJedi, I appreciate you suggestion. How tight can you get the tarp?

i was able to get the RL and edges fairly tought, but the "field" was a little floppy. It wasn'nt too windy or super heavy rain, but I think I would have been ok in a pretty heavy pour with pretty good wind.

I'm wondering if the tarp had two additional tie points for hanging, say one foot in or whatever is appropriate to hang from. That would effectively reduce the length of the tarp two feet, making a eleven foot a 9 foot tarp. And if that were feasible, would that change the effectiveness of the tie-outs?

This makes me annoyed that the diamond tarp is the standard that you get when you buy a new hammock. If they don't work well, why can't they be scrapped in favor of hex as the standard? Seems kinda like planned obselescence.

I'm sure it's a cost thing to get to a certain price point.
