Hi folks,
I'm looking to replace the 550 paracord that I have my tarp set up with to something a little lighter.
What would be a good line to use, and still be able to tie knots in as I don't have any cool gadgets to help on the tarp line. . . . yet. . .

I've used knots in 1.75 mm line before and it works ok. I prefer my Dutchware Tarpflyz for ease of use, but for knots zing it seemed to hold well enough for me with a tuckers hitch.
i like the 1.75mm line from arrowhead equip, i use a prussic and a mini biner, nice and simple and no knots
1.75mm Zing It (yellow) or Lash It (gray) seems to work very well. The two lines are exactly the same except for the color. They take most knots quite well.
And like packeagle said; the Dutchware Tarp Flyz and Dutch Hook are great additions to make setting up your tarp quick, easy, and knot-free.

You really dont need any fancy equipment to splice the hollow braid ropes. I gota roll of 22 GA wire from the chain section of the harware store for 5$ and I use 20" of it to splice with. If i lose that I have more. I also hace a number 2 and a number 3 knitting needle that helps open up the braid depending what I'm splicing. Cheap, easy, and way better than knots.
If you're looking for something cheap and fairly easy to acquire, try BRAIDED masons line. For a tarp ridge line it works great.
If it weren't for physics and law enforcement, I'd be unstoppable.
Hollow core 200 lb dacron polyester kite line. Can be spliced (whoopies, etc) and holds knots well.

I use the Dacron kite line and its fantastic (though i haven't found it in hollow core yet). Also use Speer No Tangle and Zing-It (the last two with the Dutch hooks and Tarp Flyz) and they all work great.

Those Dutch hooks and flyz do look very useful!
Just a bit expensive to ship to the uk for me at the mo!

Instead of the Dutch hooks and flyz you could use Nite Ize Figure 9´s and Knot Bone. It should be possible to get them in the UK.
