Take the tyvek. I weighs a tenth of what the blue tarp weighs and is a lot stronger. Plus, it adds the atmosphere of an Arkansas trailer park (almost as much as a blue tarp).

OK Don't throw me under the bus, I am taking this from the UL folks - Why didn't anyone suggest a well made large Poncho? You will need concrete string from the hardware store and some pebbles for the four corners and the titanium stakes.
In this one case military ponchos are too small.

I have spent a lot of nights under a piece of 3 mil drop cloth from the local hardware store. You can customize the size your want. If you can tie a sheet bend or, better yet, a double sheetbend with some cord on the 4 corners and use a full length ridgeline. Might not be the best choice for hanging the wind, but might work if you hang low. The blue wally world tarps work well too. Not light but workable.
Make sure you run the Tyvek through the washer several times to soften it.

Actually if you hang it right you can get by with 1-5x7 tarp from walmart. Mind you I did hand sew webbing loops on to it after one of the grommets pulled in a big wind. Only the very ends of my hammock got wet(I stayed nice and dry). I fixed that by making some diy snake skins out of duct tape and a trash bag. Kind of ghetto but it worked. Just make sure to lay on the diagonal and you should be good. Good Luck!

Or Big Lots, just get something about 2' longer than your set up hammock, & wide enough to cover you in driving rain. Of course location & orientation can reduce the effect of driving rain.
I agree that tyvec is sturdy & lighter. IF you can get something of the correct size. But, a "blue tarp" will last for a 2 week trip on the AT. BTW, they come in other colors than blue, in fact one of mine is brown & I have 3 green ones.

If you decide to go with a big box store tarp, check out ****'s. The tarp I bought there was lighter than the offerings at Wally World. My 8x10 is 22 oz with tie outs attached. It's not as compact and light as a proper tarp, but for $6 it shouldn't be. I'd take that before I risked it with nothing.
How old are you...when I was a youngin I did from the road crossing by Watauga Lake to Damascus in a day...so no tarp needed
There is always the Grandma Gatewood approach of a shower curtain if it hasn't already been suggested.
