    That's what I would have thought also. But prior to a trip where I intended carry-on my pack with poles, I asked going through the line. The ATA guy said "no problem", and indeed later I didn't have a problem.

    Now why I can bring a potential spear onto a plane, and not a pocketknife with a 1" blade defies logic...

    i don't use poles, but i thought people adjusted them short for uphill sections and long for down hill. this could probably be dealt with though.
