And they wonder why people don't camp in Alabama as much as other states. What a stupid rule.

Phew..... We're lucky in Denmark regarding this. We can basically camp everywhere, in the woods, with hammocks - exactly because it's not defined as a "tent unit".
It's a gray-zone area legally, cause you cannot camp in woods, outside designated campsites with tent's(a few areas have been opened up as a trial project). But even the forest rangers(they are very mellow in Denmark) don't get offended when (hammock)camping in zones where tent camping is not allowed. The "worst" reaction i've got from a forest ranger so far, was him shaking his head, if it was because of my cigar, my loud ska or my hammock - i don't know, but that's the worst so far....

Lucky in Ontario, Canada as well. I have never had any issue in any Provincial Parks (although I never really asked).

Motorcyclists have ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education)

    We need something like that.

"Camping units" are usually required for the purpose of avoiding public displays of nakedness and other NSFW activities. That is not an uncommon requirement. In PA you are not allowed to sleep in your car unless the windows are covered and opaque. Thus, no tarp tents or open air camping is permitted on public land.

I believe a camping hammock meets and/or exceeds these requirements. But my opinion and $1.50 will buy you a cup of coffee at the local gas station.

State Forest Campgrounds are usually more laid back and less restrictive. Maybe try those.
State Parks seem to have some goofy rules that don't seem thought out by outdoors type people.
    Good luck.

Alot of people go there but you can walk the trails to find a spot. Really nice with rocks walls and shallow waters.
Sorry dude but did you hear about the tornados that hit this area. Well the spot you are talking about can no longer even be seen. It is all downed trees. Besides that is not the point of the post. Thanks anyway.

After seeing posts like this where people were scolded for hanging in parks, I was a little leery about taking mine to Kerr lake in central NC. We had our camper, but I hung my eno dbl nest to lay around in. I never had a problem with any of the rangers there, so in my oppinion, Satterwhite point,Kerr lake is a great place for hammockers.

It's interesting that if you go to the Hennessy site, they refers to their hammocks as everything but hammocks. A couple of the large font quotes are "Best Lightweight Shelter" & "The Coolest Tent In The World". When they are doing the narrative, the hammocks are "ultralight camping equipment".

Wonder if there is some logic behind that after reading about the Alabama rule.
    Trust nobody!

Prolly more to get around the common perception that a hammock is that rope thing dad used to backyard nap in back in the day. How many folk stare at us with blank eyes when we describe how we camp?
