The channel looks interesting. It reminds me of Bob Dustrude's folding bucksaw, which has two pieces of channel on the ends that attach to the center piece and fold out to a secure angle. Hmmm. I wonder if you could make a two-piece folding buck saw that you'd use to cut poles to support your hammock and then reconfigure the parts into two stake booms to hold the hammock ropes. The angles needed would be different for saw and stakeboom, and where would you store the blade while camped?

Nice write up. Very logical and well illustrated.

How about driving a shepherd's hook or nail through a slotted V on the upwind side of things in a blow? You could even drill a dedicated hole near the pointed end of the V.

Has anyone tried a folding boomstake using channel? Attachment 39527
The big issue would be the aluminum ripping out. I could see this happening at either the pin or in the channel where it is holding the angle on the stake.

Your basically looking at a 12 inch stake working against something like a 1/2" lever. The mechanical advantage is huge and the pull on the stake is pretty large.

I have not tried aluminum, but did try some lighter steel tubing and it ripped out the openings. That is when I switched to the black pipe.

I built one, and the 3/8" steel spike bent. Huge, indeed.

I bent 4 out of 6... 3/8" x 12" water piping after drilling them, and using 12" nails from Lowes on my first attempt,,and switched to 3/4 in dia x 12" pipe pieces drilled at 45* angle for 12" nails and they have worked perfect. The force (ft lbs of energy) on the boom stakes are pretty awesome.

Wow, I had no idea that kind of force was being exerted. Now I see why the steel pipe!

This entire thread (and associated links) is great - thank you! The Toughstake caught my eye given I often pitch a large tarp over a couple/few hammocks when we are at the beach. I have always worried that my REI Sand/Snow Stakes (shown below) might come out when the winds come up, even though they seemed pretty solid. My worries came true a few weeks back, and my wife happened to be sitting under the tightly-pitched tarp when one of them released and slingshotted into the side of her head. It would have absolutely taken out an eye, if she had been turned in that direction. Close call, and it hurt. Anyway - time for a better approach, and I think these Toughstakes gave me my solution.

For each of my REI Stakes, I took a 20" piece of Lash-It, and brummel-locked a 1" loop in each end, with a 3" bury of the tails - resulting in a finished length of 11". I will then girth-hitch one end into the mid to lower section of the stake, pull on it the line at a 90 degree angle to the stake once it is buried in the sand, and run my guys line through the loop. Just like they show in the Toughstake vid. Should be pretty darn bomber. Will try to make a video report on a good day when I test! Then (again, like in the Toughstake vid) they should easily pull out when I detach the guy line and simply pull the attached line parallel to the stake. Can bury them deeper too.

Here are the pics of the first one:
