Instead of a marlin spike hitch and whoopie, what about just attaching a soft shackle to the tree hugger and then attach the whoopie to it. Is one better, more reliable than the other? Not too many people talk about the
SS in this use.

I have tried this with nacrabiners, at 200lbs. It held my weight for a backyard nap, but I haven't tested it any further. I am curious about the durability hopefully someone with more experience chimes in on this one.
Either way can be done.
One problem with the soft shackle: How do you attach the soft shackle to the hugger?
That is the problem the Marlin Spike Hitch solves for the Whoopie sling. I suppose the Marlin Spike HItch would also be used for the soft shackle??
I attached adjustable end of whoopie to sewn fixed loop at end of hugger
Okay, but the distance from the tree to the end of the hugger varies as the diameter of the tree varies. With the Marlin Spike, you can set the distance from the tree to the marlin spike to whatever you want by where you place the marlin spike. If you have a small tree to tree span and small diameter trees, the end of the hugger could be such that the hammock is to big to fit.. With the marlin spike that isn't a problem, just place the marlin spike very close to the tree so that the hammock fits. If you have the opposite problem, small diameter tree and large tree to tree span, then place the marlin spike further from the tree.
With the marlin spike, you control where you attach to the hugger.
If you always attach to the end of the hugger, then you have little to no control.
makes sense...so the MSH is the way to go.
i've done it and it works just fine.
small tree: muli wraps around the tree to shorten the hugger.
too big tree: slide the fixed end of the WS thru one loop and attach the fixed end WS to the other end of thehugger w/ SS.
i still pref. DC and MSH for speed, but i carry a couple SSs for backup or other attachments,
I definitely prefer MSH and toggle and have used it for all overnights.,was just saying that i have tried it with Nacro's sucsessfully
I'm pretty sure I read in the original Nacrabiner thread that they were tested consistently to about 1.7 times the rope strength (when using the diamond stopper knot). So 7/64th Amsteel Nacrabiners should hold well over 2000 lbs. Not sure about the soft shackle, I've never used them.
I currently do this with Nacrabiners, and it works well. I think it works out slightly lighter than MSH because I can get away with much shorter tree straps. The MSH is more flexible though, sometimes I use it instead with a stick or something if the trees are small and close together, and I need to shorten the tree straps.
What if you were to tie the SS to the strap? Then you could attatch it at any point. I was thinking of using a double sheet bend. Do you think that would work?
