It sure is beautiful! I had a blast, and the weather was incredible. I think a friend of mine and I are going back out that way in mid-July to do another hike - he was really jealous of my solo hike!
jesse did you walk through a lot of grasses and brush on the trail (not bushwacking, just on the trail)? i'm up there next week and am debating on shorts vs pants for ticks. if the trail was well maintained then i'm going with shorts.
info?
thanks
There are pretty long sections of high grasses and brush in the deep forest-y areas, and stinging nettles, especially around Double Run, but I think you'd be okay with shorts, just be sure to bring gaiters because it is pretty wet up there. The only other argument against shorts would be the rocky sections around High Rock - you will be crawling over some giant boulders, which might be rough on the knees. I wore convertible pants and kept them in "pants" mode the whole time, because of nettles and bugs.
That place is tick heaven. I would advise against shorts in the high grass areas. It doesn't get enough traffic to keep it clean... and them buggers will hitch hike on anything that comes along. Open forest... maybe not so critical but over grown grass...
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
