I haven't done it yet but I was planning to just stick a grommet in the middle of the bottom.
Suggestion if you're going to cut and heat seal. Take an old crappy knife you don't care about. Heat it up til it's almost red. Use it to hot cut the fabric. Chop and seal in one go! I use a blade shaped tip on a soldering iron to cut rope like that. It works amazingly well.

Heat up a nail and push melt it through the bag.
Usually I reinforce the hole with some webbing and then melt a hole.

My girlfriend has a nice sewing machine with a fancy button-hole foot and setting. Just install the special foot, select the appropriate setting, and hit a button and it does it all. I made mine about 1 1/2 inches long, just to one side of the bottom seam.
