I think its better to secure the tarp to the tree independent of the hammock. The suspension can move as you move in the hammock. For a tarp, it's good to have a nice tight pitch and to attain this its good to be secured to something stationary. Not to say it won't work but depending on the weather you may want to consider it.
The only way that I can think of that might keep tension on the tarp like that is to attach it to the Whoopies with a tarp tensioner. But depending on how much the suspension moves when you get in your hammock, that might not work so well...
