IMHO, I have a lot more flexibility with an extender than with an extra-long sling. I have always carried a short line tied to my pack. Mainly, I use it to keep my pack off the ground and away from critters and at a convenient height to get stuff out of it, while it camp. I wrap the line around a tree trunk or limb and usually don't even tie it; friction holds it just fine.
After making some whoopie slings, I made a 4' piece of Amsteel with a fixed eye on each end. Now I take it instead of the piece of line I used to take. I've had to use it to get around a tree twice so far. But otherwise use it as described above.
But it's definitely HYOH, so you have to decide what is best for you.
