Tarp Tie-out Help - What's the story?

happyfngy, I really like the way that you implemented #3.
Let us know how it works in the field because I think I'm going to adopt this method as my normal tie-out method.

Thanks Mike. It's hanging now and they're calling for tstorms for the next couple of days. I live at the foot of the mountain and we get some high winds here. It will likely get a workout...

So far, great!

Has been hanging for 4-5 days through several storms. I've slept under it once. Just had a big blow go through this afternoon and I ran out to test the setup. It was blowing and raining hard and I didn't get wet and the tarp shows no signs of stress.

That is a really nice looking tarp. I like the tie-out option you finally chose. I will have to give this a try when I am finally able to start working on my tarp again.

Thanks! I make mine pretty simple. 12" of lash-it put a simple eye on one end, the other end I do a short back splice and then a double overhand. Then attach it to my ridge line as a prusik and larks head over the knot after attaching the tarp. You hardly ever have to take it off but it is easily removable.

It looks like most of the cottage tarp makers use reinforced patches, but this seems to make the most sense, and would actually spread the load in the right places...I will definitely keep this in mind when I make my next tarp!

Yes, I think for anything that is a "corner" this method works great.

If you're adding ties to a long straight edge, a patch is likely more appropriate. In my mind, in that scenario, (along a straight edge,) it's the first few stitches that would get the stress if you only sewed along the hem. In a corner, the pull should be in the direction of the hem, more or less.

(then again things go on "in my mind" that have nothing to do with reality...so there's that...)

I was just debating this same question for my first DIY tarp when my Google-Fu found this.

I think I will do the #3 edge sewn style as well. Seems like a simpler method for this simple guy.

Bear in mind that he used PU coated Nylon not Silnylon. He also did it over a triple thick hem. PU is heavier, stronger, and tends to stretch less. If you are using Sil you might want to think reinforcement patches or at least do the same wide thicker hem.
