    PLUQ vs IXUQ

    Hey All,

So I am thinking of making a DIY UQ to get me down to the 40's and was wondering if anyone could compare the PLUQ and the IXUQ (3 layer)...

I have a few specific questions...

    1) Is there a big weight difference?
    2) is one warmer then the other?
    3) does one pack smaller then the other?
    4) is one warmer then the other?
    5) any thing I am missing?

    Thanks!!

IX Is lighter.. I don't have measurements, but it's about half, if I had to guess.
    2) is one warmer then the other?
Unless you add a layer of insulation to the PLUQ, the IX is warmer. (that said, I added 1 layer of IX to my PLUQ.

    The PLUQ packs smaller.
    4) is one warmer then the other?
    IX is warmer...

    5) any thing I am missing?

I have had condensation issues with my DIY IX UQ, but not with the PLUQ.
I like both, but packing the IX UQ is a pain. You have to roll it up, and it doesn't compress at all. The PLUQ doesn't compress much, but it's easier to pack. My PLUQ is a no-sew option, and I like it for warm weather. It is heavier than my KAQ Lost river, but versatile, as I can loosen up the end cords and it's a useful blanket, or in colder weather, I tie it over my hammock as an overcover. It works well.

Adding additional insulation to the pluq is easy, and a layer of IX in the middle seems to add a good 5-degrees of comfort without the condensation issues I had with my IX UQ.

Weight wise, it's hard to beat IX. I'll have to weigh both to really tell the difference, though... Online, I see weights listed as 21-28 oz for the poncho liner. I'll try to weigh my IX UQ when I get home...

For storage, I just leave my IX UQ (MMG Shamu) on the hammock and wrap the whole thing in a python. Find that it stores really easily.

    Great Info!

JohnSawyer: How low have you taken your IXUQ? and the PLUQ?

I like the idea of adding a layer of IX to the PLUQ as well...do you think that will affect its compressibility?

PL = Poncho Liner. A military (often surplus) poncho liner used to make bivy sacks in the field using a poncho as the outer shell and the liner to make the bag.

You can buy poncho liners commercially from several places, including Wiggy, who has a specialized set of materials. I have an Army/Navy surplus store where I can get mine. Ebay and Craigslist are also good options.
