Yeah, it's seeming that that is the best thing to do. Tomorrow I will give a couple places a call or visit, inquire about what they have to offer, and also pick their brain on the Craigslist machines. If I can get something robust and in good working order for under $100, I'll be considering it a huge success.

Alright, the lady from Craigslist purchases used machines and restores them. "Oil, cleaning, tuning, anything it needs really. Then we check it to make sure everything is functioning well." I've got a Singer Stylist 418 and a Singer Stylist 457 at my disposal for under $100. Anyone have any input? I believe the 457 is the beefier machine. She also said she has lots of other machines which I may check out. Just curious as to your thoughts on my endeavor so far. Thanks for all the help to this point!

Go look. Try them out. Remember... "oh shiny" is important for the parts that are supposed to be shiny. Either one will probably be better than a Wally World Wonder.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Sounds good. I'll be posting back tonight either with a very excited post, and probably pics of my new machine, or something I learned, and where else I may hunt next. We'll see!

I've never even been. Rochester is about 6 hours in no traffic to NYC, and home is the complete opposite direction from NYC. If I was closer, I'm sure I could get something phenomenal, but I'm not driving that far for a used thread injector!

Rochester is only about 8 hours from the garment district in NYC. That's via one of the most expensive turnpikes in the country. Not to mention the worst second only to the PA pike. Most of what one would find there would not be really suitable for gear making. My wife is _very_ familiar with that district. It is an interesting place to wander around in. But IMO mostly for the deli's and that kind of thing.

Hahaha no worries! I get that quite a bit, as I'm sure every other New York state resident not residing in NYC does.

Mrs. Squidbilly here - check out Goodwill's online auction at

    http://www.shopgoodwill.com/search/S...&showthumbs=on

You will have to pay shipping and nothing is guaranteed - but most of the machines are very cheap and old enough that there would not be a lot of cost involved in getting it to work, unlike the electronic ones of today. Happy shopping!
