Portable Hammock Stand

Alamosa and everybody that contributed to this posting over time,,a big ,,as I pulled this up last nite, and made one and will hang in it tonite testing it all out,,works like a charm. I didn't have enough amsteel so testing out 250lb glow wire of Lawsons and it held the wife perfectly as I adjusted everything. Will order some amsteel asap tho as I want alittle more pounds of strength in my tie downs to the booms. This is a great way to hang a hammock without trees available. I made my first outfit with 1" conduit, and will get a piece of 1 1/4 dia to nest the 2 setups for me and the wife with everything in each piece of larger dia conduit. I made my set 5' tall and the spread to hang the hammock was 13' in length. Thanks again everybody for a very niffty idea on how to hang without trees.

How do you think Zing-It/Lash-It would work for the guy-lines? I'm trying to keep some costs down here.

It works out that each guy-line will have tension equal to the weight placed in the hammock. It could be much more based on the actual angles used. I wouldn't be comfortable with zing-it.

Were there vehicles near the campsites at the camporee? If so, perhaps you could hang between the roof racks of a couple of SUVs. I love your design of the stand. I'm just looking for an easier way when trees aren't available.

Cars aren't usually allowed in the camping area. I can setup the stand in about 8 minutes, so for that trouble it is probably a lot faster than positioning vehicles and risk damaging them.

the 250lb Lawson's glow wire finally broke in my testing,,amsteel is the only way to go on this as was in a hurry to check everything out on my first hammock stand,,and never could get nylon rope I had to quit stretching,,have to wait on the amsteel to spend a night in the stand,,so making a second stand for the wife. No stretch,,no worry about breakage either so just have to wait on amsteel..

I'm curious how the aluminum camo netting poles would work for this. I seem to recall they were pretty rugged and light and can probably be had even cheaper than this with some searching for sections rather than the entire kit. The fiberglass ones were pretty tough but I think I'd have more trust in the aluminum.

Has anyone made a version that can be broken down to shorter poles?

I want to use this system while on a bicycle trip. I will need something that can be broken down so I can carry it on the bike. I am short with short legs, so my hammock is smaller than most and I hang it pretty close to the ground. I'll have to hang my hammock to get the correct measurements, but I am thinking that if I have two 2' sections for each end, placed close enough to the hammock will give me the correct height and sag.

Two 2' sections or maybe three 16" sections should fit on my bike rack. Of course, lightness and bulk is a concern. Any ideas on pole material? How about a way to couple the sections together?

One note on that, when putting the boom stakes in, make sure the free end of the boom stake is actually point up (above level). It seems counter-intuitive, but in reality, if the free end is lower, it moves the stake closer to a vertical position. Having the free end higher both increases the angle of the stake into the ground and increases the angle of pull from the cord to the stake.

Love this stand idea and am going to look at building one. I must say, though, that I thought that I understood how all of this worked until I read this paragraph. I'm a little lost as to what is being described here and am hoping that someone can flesh it out for me.
