First off, get well soon! Secondly, just trying to make sense of what happened. Did the strap itself break, or did it come out of the buckle?
Your talk about cinch buckles failing has given me the paranoids. I use, trust and love my cinch buckles.
Back em up with a slippery half hitch, I forgot, and I had always done it till the one incident. Those that came with my new WBBB do not require the back up.

Are we sure Shug hasn't landed on his head a time or two? Waiting for my first fall, sooner or later, think I'll hang a little lower now.
First time I rigged my hammock to hang in my room I missed the stud on one side, needless to say, when the rigging ripped out of the drywall, ouch.

I think we all know the feeling...took a spill in one of my 1st DIY jobbers...out in the piney woods, lots of fanny brusing (not near as bad as you)! I read somewhere "pitch your hammock only high enough as you would wanna fall". Once you get ur straps and suspension figured out, you'll be safe. "hang" in there!!
Glad to see you are healing up from a hard shot there. We've all had a tumble or two, but not many have done so with the style Shug can. It would be a real scream to have someone at a camp dinner ask Shug to "pass the mustard" and watch the juggling act.
I use a modified sheetbend to attach my suspension to my hammock. When I made a pair of whoopies and switched out the mule tape I figured I'd cheat a bit on how much hammock material I'd dedicate to the bight, and see if I couldn't make my hammock a bit longer. Worked like a charm... for the first 2 minutes, and then the hammock slipped through the suspension and, whump! I promptly retied the end, giving it a good sized bight this time, settled down, and realized that I forgot to retie the other side that I had cheated on... Whump!
3 lessons learned that day: (a) try to learn your lessons once rather than twice (b) don't cut corners where safety is concerned (c) in spite of what Clint Eastwood fans might say... Hang'em Low!
Sorry you had to experience that in such a harsh manner, and I'm glad you're okay enough to get back out there
You're gonna need a bigger hammock
