    Smile my DIY hammock

So a quick video of my DIY rig for this backpacking season. havent got out much this season but a cross country move (VA->CA), new baby, and new job, have definitely taken up my time. wish i had more time to edit and produce a better video but here ya go!!

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
    Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Great job, I liked the dipped sides on the hammock. Thanks for posting.

Thanks, I should have put more time into filming and editing but work has been busy and I wanted to get something up

Good job. I've been sleeping in my DIY since January, every night. No more restless sleep.

That recently linked NPR article. Old news as far as I'm concerned.

Another benefit, one I was shooting for, it gets hot in my house. Face it, I'm a fat boy and we sweat alot. In a bed I'm a soppy mess and that doesn't lead to good sleep either. The air conditioner vent blows on my hammock. My back is 70ish degrees thanks to the vent, PERFECT sleeping temps for me. No sweat, SOMETIMES I get cold. Turned the thermostat up and started saving money. It's great.

Now, if you can just get a little time out to use it you'll love it.

Nice work on the DIY. Would like to hear more about the "hourglass" shape.

If it's a bit small just make another with some added length. Heck, you're a hammock making veteran now.

Amateur gear head maybe.... Working on veteran status. Until now my gear making tendencies have been mostly confined to stoves. Learning to use the sewing machine really opens a whole new world. So the best way to explain the hour glass shaw is that from the mid point on the long sides I measured in 8 inches. I then freehanded a cat-cut that extended the length of the tarp with deepest part at the 8 inch mark in the center. This narrowed out the center an made for the lower sides. It is all trial and error but I like it so far as my first model. Plenty of room for improvement

Here is a rough sketch of the pattern. I slightly curved the top also.

the hourglass shape is very innovative. i experimented with a couple of different shapes, but couldn't get anything other than a hammock that would roll me right out when i got in. might need to try this one next. a huge advantage to having kids is i can try a shape and keep cutting it down to a size that they can use. good job.

That looks great!!! The hourglass shape is very interesting and very creative!!! I think I'd like to try that. I would like to know from GRIESL what DIDN'T work on his/her attempts.

TraumaRN, if you wanted to, you could move the attachment points of your structural ridgeline OUT farther on your whoopie slings, which--since the suspension is coming in at a downward angle--would raise your ridgeline up. It doesn't take much (too much, and you can't reach it while lying down!) But I did this on the Peace Pipe and I like it a lot (I put alpine butterfly loops in my whoopie slings between the hammock knots and the buries to attach the ridgeline to--I know people here say they'll slip, but I've never had them budge once). And since your structural ridgeline is adjustable, you won't have any trouble making it longer.

Again, awesome job and really creative. Thanks for posting (Be sure to CHANGE YOUR PROFILE i.e.: location AND hammock!!)

I tried an asym cut on one side with and then without a footbox. didn't work. Seems to me equidistance from top to bottom is key, whether you use an asymetrical shape or whatever type of shape, just needs to be a mirror image from top to bottom. But I'm still fiddlin.....
