True, he wasn't alone, and I guess the odds of it happening are pretty slim, the article said it has been 25 years, but that would be my luck!

I am never alone on a trip as there is always me, myself and I; so I have plenty of company.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Normally tough, gun carrying thugs would melt in the woods because there was "no noise" and when ever there was noise, (Coyotes) they would freak and run to be close to me, occasionally even on my lap. They were so entrenched in their way of life and experientially limited that the unfamiliar was frightening.

Most of us experience something akin to this when in unfamiliar territory, our "fight or flight" response kicks in. The beauty of taking these kids in the woods was that it placed them in a state of what I term "positive crisis" where they are safe, have a supportive adult with them, and because of the unfamiliar environment and the "crisis" they experienced, they were open to change and new ways of thinking.

In my life, when I have been able to push myself into new environments and find effective support systems while doing so, I have experienced significant personal growth. Solo backpacking and canoeing bring about that level of the unfamiliar that if embraced with faith and joy can bring about an incredible change in perspective, effective problem solving, and personal growth.

I am embarking on a 4 day solo paddle and I can't wait. A good book, a fishing rod, 4 days of silence, all will be opportunity for me. I will be in a state of positive crisis because of the unknown, the different, yet the possibilities.

Thoughts become things. Think good ones.
I can't agree more ... It is great peace if "you" make it that way for yourself. If not it can be "not so much" think about making it one of the places you want to be and you'll be just fine. Peace ...

I haven't read all the pages, but it is interesting to me that sometimes people let their imagination run wild. There is no doubt a better chance if you getting injured or killed in the vehicle that you drive to the trailhead or camp site with than while camping.

I like the solitude of a lone hike and camp. I also enjoy the company when with friends and family, although it does make you comform to the group dynamic with time frames, hike speed etc...

I reckon that's why this topic exist! That has to suck, a lot! One minute you are on the trail, the next you are in eternity.
It's the moments in between that really suck.

As long as 4 out of 5 voices in my head agree...then I am doing alright.
