    gathered end suspension check

I finished sewing my first DIY hammock today based off Knotty's directions and modified by the illustrations in the DIY sheets thread to make it a double layer.

I have plenty of amsteel to make the suspension and I've been mulling over the best way to do this. If I understand the method on the 'sheets' thread they first wrap the bundle of fabric on each end and then use a triple fisherman's knot to form a loop that the actual suspension will attach to.

What I 'think' I want to do is just make a double locked brummel on the end of a shortish piece of the amsteel and larks head this loop around the gathered end. This will leave me with a tag end just hanging out maybe 10" or so. I'll bury my actual main suspension line on each end into this tag end to form a UCR. The bury from the locked brummel may limit how short that tag end can be, but you get the idea.

    Any reason this won't work?

If you're using Knotty's gathered end hammock with the channeled hems, you can simply run a bit of lightweight (it's non-weight bearing) cordage through the channels, wrap once to tighten up and tie a half knot, loop again and tie a double fisherman's knot. The suspension is holding the hammock by the ball of fabric which is formed, not the whipping on the fabric.

    That's a great solution, thanks!

That should work for a UCR. May I suggest making a small loop on the tag end and attach a small loop of line like mason line and then form a prusik around the main suspension line. When you slide the line through the UCR you then pull the prusik to keep the loose end of the bury taut and prevent the loss of constriction.

Gqgeek81 - be aware that the UCR approach is finicky since there isn't tension from both ends of the constriction like there is with a whoopie. It's very easy to upset it and get dropped. There are techniques for getting around this but they involve extra steps and that you don't forget.

I used the o-ring trick to keep the UCR from slipping, however I miscalculated my lengths and the bury on the UCR is only about 5 inches which slowly drops me while hanging even if I use a few slippery half hitches on the slack line.

So I'll have to create a new pair of connectors with longer tag ends for more bury length.

I tossed it on the scale as is and came up with 19oz which is a good 12 oz lighter than my HH explorer with snake skins, so I'm pretty impressed.
