If I switch to whoopie slings maybe I could use a spectra sling from yates
    http://www.yatesgear.com/climbing/slings/index.htm
Or I also just found this site, I wonder if their webbing will work with my cinch buckles http://www.rescueresponse.com/store/...atwebbing.html
Not sure how I'd get loops sewn into them though. I should mention the rescue webbing is 6000lb break strength... I'm assuming that has to be spectra but I emailed them to check.
I also found this http://www.strapworks.com/Polyester_Webbing_p/pew1.htm which might be just the ticket!

I'm 100% sure my webbing was not nylon, it was poly. I was using webbing/buckle suspension, not the slapstraps or anything from ENO other than the hammock.

Here's what I think: you had a small, damaged spot on your webbing that escaped notice. It doesn't take much...just a nick, and you have a stress riser. Under load, that tiny nick will propagate across the face of the webbing, and before you know what hit you, you're on the ground.

Fwiw, I'm not crazy about the idea of 2 in a hammock. I know, people do it all the time, and get away with it, but it makes me uneasy.

I completely think that's possible. I had a buddy who had a slight nick in the webbing and he didn't think anything of it (he's not the brightest bulb in the box), and before he knew it he was on the ground. And the strap broke way under it's breaking load.

If trees can damage webbing so easily, shouldn't there be a better alternative? Or does everyone carry spare webbing? I guess from the nights spent in the wbbb I just kinda figured the webbing was pretty durable.

Why do you think the tree damaged the webbing? That's an unlikely scenario.

Yeah, I think it's possible that the webbing was slightly damaged, but I don't think a tree would have done it.

IMHO I think what happened was more a freak accident than anything else. You could replace the webbing and probably never have that happen again. So, there's really no need to try to overcompensate and carry really heavy webbing. Just my .02.

It sounds possible that you were using what my local gear store calls "accessory" webbing - stuff for backpacks and such - not load-bearing. Just looking at my setup it's hard to imagine that I could break the webbing under any circumstance.

The webbing I was using was rated to 1000+ lbs, but I'm gonna switch it out with some 3000lb webbing and see how that works.

This group hasn't given automobile seat belt strapping its due. Produced in massive quantities for a long time with tight specification of quality.

Expensive new. Cheap from salvage. The part of cars that is never worn out.

To the OP: Yes dyneema climbings slings (aka cordelettes) are light, strong, tough and relatively expensive. $13 for one 4 foot sling.

They are 10-12mm, so a sling doubled around a tree would be like using a 1" strap.
