    Tarp repairs

I have a silnylon tarp made many years ago that has done very good service. On a trip to Yampa River, it was torn at the seam connecting the ridgeline to the tree. I was able to jerry-rig a repair, using a small rock to tie to the ridgeline in a pocket of the tarp near the edge.

Now that I'm home, I'd like to get it repaired. Anyone know any service around Altanta (Cobb County) that can sear the torn edge and repair this puppy?

Sounds like a DIY opportunity. You can at least start it off by searing the torn edges yourself. Cut off any long threads and carefully brush the edge with the tip of a small soldering iron. Have a safe place to put the soldering iron down, as you may need to adjust the fabric to reach all the edges. Don't try to move the fabric with one hand while holding the soldering iron in the other.

Next step would be cutting out a patch to cover the tear and reinforce the tieout point. Use the soldering iron to cut so the edges will be seared.

Want to proceed to sewing? Even if you don't, having this part done will make it easier on anyone you get to finish the job.

Thanks. I had always wondered how to deal with the lack of a "hot knife". I'm lucky that there is no tear so much as the hem/seam on the border seperated from the bulk of the tarp.
