Red face Down Top Quilt-What to buy???

I took my new hammock out on a short trip and soon found out that using a sleeping bag in a hammock is a terrible ordeal that is only made worse after a few drinks. That being said I'm in the market for a top quilt to replace my rei 20 degree subkilo. I don't know too much about top quilts, but I'd be using it to hike the Appalachian Trail next year starting mid march or the beginning of april. I found this online.....http://www.hammockgear.com/cart/inde...&products_id=2
but I'm also open to suggestions. Also what would make a good underquilt to pair with it?? Thanks a ton!

For the AT consider a JRB Wearable TopQuilt (The Sierra Sniveler) and Hammock Gear UnderQuilt (3 Season Phoenix or Incubator)

Both http://www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/ and http://www.hammockgear.com make fantastic products. There are others out there as well, but those are my two go-to vendors.

That said, if you think you're going to get wet on the AT, you might consider a synthetic top from arrowheadequipment.webs.com.

For my thru-hike I'm taking my JRB Stealth [<1lb] - Hammock Gear 3 Season Phoenix [<1lb] for my whole hike [I have video previews of both in my signature] and in the winter I plan on adding some sort of pod, at this point I'm looking at the >2lb Feathered Friends Wearable Rock Wren. I've tested the pod method of sleeping and found it fit my needs and then some, but I haven't tested the Rock Wren yet. Using the Wren would keep my winter system below 4lbs.

I would keep the bag, unzip it half way and use it as a top quilt. I would spend my money on an UQ instead. My .02, HYOY. Welcome to the forum, btw!

thats what I was gonna say
Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......

I agree with the "keep the sleeping bag as a top-quilt" suggestions and just buy an underquilt. But, if you are deadset on buying something, I love my JRB No Sniveler, and can't go wrong with an UQ from http://www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/ or http://www.hammockgear.com.

I have 3 TQ and 3 UQ from hammock gear an cant recommend them enough. Their ratings are spot on, quality top notch and best of all IMHO is that they are fully customizable in fill ,color, width, length and how you want your foot box to be closed or opened.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
