Considering a sleeping bag OQ/UQ mod, without the peapod.

Costco has a bunch of these sleeping bags in (just not on the website) for $28.

They are 20 deg rated, 3 LBS. They have a shape that begs for a hammock mod (either Peapod or other). Zipper vent on the botton, and a off-center zipper could make it a real winner when I look at a lot of the mods I see.

But what about taking this oversized shape and making a OQ/UQ by just cutting it in half? It looks like it would be large enough to insulate the bottom side up past your shoulders, and the top could wrap around your body on both sides like a quilt. Downside would be the lack of a footbox, and that the interior is cotton.

I picked one up to replace an old mummy bag. Don't know the temp rating on the old bag, and would not let me side-sleep at all. This was unrolled at costco, and was really wide, so I picked it up anyway.

Am I missing something here? Seems like a good idea for a relatively cheap sleep system.

The one thing about splitting and making both TQ and UP, is that with the TQ, you may want to have a footbox pocket, and you won't have a lot of material to wrap in. The shape does beg for an UQ though, or as you said a peapod. My DIY TQ width was 48" wide, with closure at the bottom... and it is just about the right size to tuck in with.

Peapod potential kinda makes me wonder if I should hit a Costco in my travels.
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

    Very interesting. Keep us posted.

Is 40" wide enough for an UQ?
Is 40" wide enough for a TQ?
What size does it compress to?

One thought on the foot box:
Could you cut the bottom to make a 3/4 UQ
Leave 1/4 of the botton attached to the top to fashion foot box for the TQ.

Do you think that it is big enough to actually go all the way around the hammock like a pea pod? If that is the case, you have found one heck of a deal on a peapod!

Any new information on what you've accomplished with this? Is it big enough to go all the way around like a peapod? Has anyone ever modded out a double sleeping bag to a peapod? Walmart has some $30 double sleeping bags...just curious.
