Can't speak as to your specific issue, but I've come crashing down in a similar manner with no toggle failure though.

The whoopie had slipped off the knot (and evidently enough off the toggle) that when I sat down, boom. This was after I was fiddling with tightening and loosening the whoopie a few times.

I ended up flipping the whoopie the other way around with the fixed eye at the toggle and the adjustable eye attached to the hammock with a Dutch biner and chainlink girth hitched to the hammock.

So from the tree - MSH with toggle, fixed eye of the whoopie, whoopie sling, adjustable eye of the whoopie, Dutch biner, chainlink.

With this setup, anytime you adjust the whoopie sling, nothing moves at the toggle. So, once you put that eye on the knot on the toggle, it doesn't move around at all - no matter how much you adjust the whoopie.

Take a look at HF member Bloomgorge's Elephant Trunks. Great piece or hardware to replace the Marlin spike hitch.

Gqgeek81 - I won a set of these at the MAHHA group hang in the spring but just haven't been using them. I'd be happy to send them to you at no charge.

Hey Knotty, if Gqgeek81 is not interested I'd be interested in them.

For those wanting the Solomon Bar, I like this site...
    http://www.itstactical.com/skillcom/...k-solomon-bar/
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

    Bonus!
    Thanks Knotty!
I will in turn be paying that forward more or less as the setup is intended to be a spare hammock for ground dweller friends to borrow when going with us 'real hangers'.

Can't have him toting a 30lb walmart tent into Linville Gorge Not if he wants to be seen with me anyway

    My $ .02:

$ .01 - I think Bubba's right about the nature of the failure; the crushed carbon tube bent under load and then straightened out after the whoopie slipped off. Even a Solomon bar or whipping might not have prevented this. Use a stronger toggle.

$ .02 - My Solomon bars are harder to slide than the whipping method that Griz uses.

Just in time, I'm sitting hear getting ready to try one or the other. I think I like the whipping looks a bit more but not a big difference.

I've been meaning to learn the Solomon bar for a while anyway.
