    Red face Introducing...

    Hi all,

Permit me to give a brief introduction of myself. I'm a Dutchman (doh!) and more than that, I'm an insomniac as well, at least I've been one since my brain haemorrhage 5 years ago. Mine was caused by an accident, I'm still a bit too young to get one by natural causes, being 33 now. And I've read that studies have shown that hammocks help people sleep better (and fall asleep quicker) because of the rocking effect, Now even though I have a very comfortable (and expensive) bed, I reckoned I could do iwth a little rocking myself.
Instead of looking for a giant woman with maternal tendencies who could rock me (I'm 1 meter 85 cm tall, about 6ft I think)to sleep (I don't think GM-cience has reached the point where it could provide me with that kind of woman - besieds in fairy tales - their natural habitat - they tend to be carnivorous, another reason for me not to hope something - pardon: someONE - like that would show up any time soon) so I bought this instead:

(page is in Dutch, sorry!)Upside: it's not too expensive, a real boon since my insomnia has led me to lose my job - but I got it today and I think it's a tad too narrow - and the wooden bars at the endsprevent me from lying init properly, so I'm placing pillows on the floor to keep me from hurting myself too badly when I fall out.
but right now another fer of me is that my sheets might slip down, causing me to awke up because of the cold.

    Welcome!

Are you looking for something to sleep in overnight? I love backyard hammocks, but personally I can't sleep without a tad bit flatter lay. If you're not satisfied with the one you purchased, check out the DIY section. You can easily make a cheap and fully functional asymmetrical (meaning you lie diagonally to the ridge line to reduce the banana effect) hammock out of some parachute cord and a few yards of rip stop nylon. It's a great way to try things out and fun to boot as well.

I wish you well in your endeavors, and forgive me if you know all of this already!

Ah, thank you all for the warm welcomes! And this tip in particular seems useful.
I quite like some DIY, I used to make my own guitar amps (all tube), those didn't require any stitching or anything, but what the heck.

I just tried for the first time, and after 20 minutes I went back into my own bed again, because I'd fallen out. I also found out that I needed a sleeping bag to keep my back warm, the sheet on top of me didn't cut it, had to get out of the house to get it (at 0:10), then had to try quite hard to get into the hammock again, and found out that the one I bought is too unstable - you lie too flat, not in a stable pocket, so I rolled out . Oh well, at least it's a start. Look on the bright side; at least I fell out rather quickly, rather then during my REM-sleep.
Good thing I'd put all those pillows on the floor.
And I also found I experienced a pleasurable sensation without roking too much, but that minor rocking I did get, when combined with my grogginess was rather nice.

Welcome from the west coast of the US of A. I have sleep problems too. Activity before bed helps me. Especially exercise, like running.

Thanks for that tip, too. I don't like running, but I might do some home-fitness exercises - just not so much that I break out in a sweat, because that would be unpleasant in bed and I don't really like showering before bed.
    What caused your sleeping problems?
