Hello, my name is Roy. I live in Renton, Washington, a suburb of Seattle. I’m the newest noob to the world of hammock camping. I ordered my Hennessy Hammock Explorer Deluxe (with snakeskins) off of Amazon yesterday and it should be showing up sometime today!
I stumbled upon the world of Hammock camping by accident the other day while I was browsing for a plain old backyard “lazytime” hammock on Amazon. Then I saw these amazing contraptions with integrated bug nets, storage pouches, rainfly attachments and cold weather capabilities, and I was enraptured. I came to the forum and a few “Hanger” blogs to do as much research as I felt necessary before putting my order in. Despite all the great looking brands and models of hammock available out there , something about the Hennessy’s bottom opening and built in insect net really appealed to me.
In the interest of full disclosure, I am not a hiker, biker, climber, trekker, nor do I go camping with any regularity these days. That’s the price I pay for having two wonderful kids at home, ages 4 and 1 ˝. I am, however a member of King County 4x4 Search and Rescue. Our vehicle load out list requires us to have enough survival supplies for an overnight in the field. And with an overnight Field Training Exercise coming up at the end of the month, I decided it was time to get a good quality shelter that would be easy to keep in the SAR kit in the truck. At the FTX 2 years ago I tried sleeping across the backseat of my truck. Unfortunately I discovered that I was taller than my truck was wide. It made for a very uncomfortable and un-restful night. I’d like to think I’ve learned from my mistakes.
I’m a big fan of internet forums as an informational resource and an online community. I have part of many forums for things ranging from working and riding Harley Sportsters (xlforum.net) and optimizing smartphones (droidforums.net) and I’m a moderator on the biggest Nissan Frontier forum (clubfrontier.org). So naturally the first place I go to find the inside scoop on a new interest is the forum! Now that I’ve done some baseline research, learned some of the lingo, and watched all 10 parts of Shug’s Hammock How-to’s…Essentials for noobs and whatnot, I feel much more prepared to start learning first-hand how to use and customize my new hanging shelter.
And if the hammock happens to get set up between a couple of trees in the backyard on a sunny Sunday afternoon for some “lazytime”, I’m not going to be complaining.
Thanks and Shalom Y’all!
