    Hammock in the Cohutta's

Just returned from a trip with my son who had never backpacked before. Camped right on the Conasauga River, didnt see a single soul, had amazing weather cooling down to low sixties at night and hovering around 90 during the day.

I slept in my Warbonnet BB and put the boy (man) in my old Northface Rock 22 tent. (Age has it's rewards....) I must have slept great because he informed me that he could hear me doing "bear calls" in the night...

This was my first trip solo without seasoned hangers to make sure I hung it right and I did okay. Trees could have been a little farther apart, the Mambajamba tarp barely cleared it! and I was hanging a little high but it worked!

Anyway, even though I had a neoair under me, I still had some cool spots on my bum so the July birthday girl is in the market for an underquilt. I am a cold sleeper so am struggling with the decision to get the Yeti or a full length quilt.....
(Funny Side Story) this area is known for bear activity. So I checked the board at the trail head and explained to my son that since there were no notices or posters, we were probably in good shape. We would hang everything as usual but didnt really expect a problem. So when we headed out of the trail I noticed the back side of the board which was COVERED with bear warnings and advice!!! Yeeks!

KP, you would have loved the weird knot I ended up with for the tarp, I think I will call it the "Sassafras Switch Knot" Sweet camping spot though!

LOL Too funny! I can't wait to see the soon to be world famous Sassafras Switch Knot! hahaha

I'm glad that you and your son had a great time. I always seem to enjoy my trips to the Cohutta's even though I know that it's full of big hairy bears, loud hooting owls in the night, giant woodpeckers that bang on the trees in the morning and of course all of the creepy crawling things. :-) And of course, camping next to the Conasauga is the bomb. LOVE IT!

OK Later! Have a happy 4th!
