$100 Pertex 800 fill top quilt

Just ordered the Rab Quantum Top Bag from Dpt of Goods for $103. It has 7 ounces of down weighs either 14 or 16 ounces (conflicting info, I'll post when i get it), uses pertex quantum and 800 fill down (750 UK measurement). I read the reviews at BPL, and the feed back was that it was a little tight and that the down didn't drape as far as they like. Just bought a sewing machine too, so I plan to just cut down the middle and hem the edges to make it similar to any other quilt (i.e. golight or hammock gear) and given that I'm in a hammock and not the ground, the underquilt should solve the problems the ground dwellers had with the insulation not going far enough under you. Should be a good first DIY project. Seems like a real steal for $103 and minimal modifications needed. Once it gets colder I may cut the baffles open and put another ounce of down in there, but we'll see how she does in the summer first.

Its great, I've used it on my clark and my BB and does well on both. Haven't had it below 30 yet which is the real test but when it cools down ill put it through its paces

cool deal man. you'll probably save 2 ounces or so getting rid of the zipper and hood. make sure you keep us posted on your project. $105 for an 800 fill top quilt < 14 ozs is NICE.

Did you get the AR or standard? I'd like to know what the weight turns out being and how you felt about DOG as far as being a reliable online site, I've not seen them before.

Is this the one you ordered?
    http://www.departmentofgoods.com/rab...rrProd=RAB0090
One question, the one with the hood is rated to 32F according to the questions and answers under the product, but temp.rating was not listed in the specs. Also, however, the hoodless one you ordered says 55F in the specs.
    What gives?
Are these the same bags are far as fill and weight, without considering the hood?
Maybe you got yourself a 32F bag ?
    What your take?
How much more down you figure to add to get it down to near 32F if its a 55F to start?
    Thanks.

I think you have a good find! The RAB products are top notch. Pertex is top shelf material. RAB is pretty conservative on their temperature ratings.

You are correct in that hammock quilts do not need to be as wide as ground quilts.

BTW, I had to BLOCK "Steep and Cheap" website on my computer - otherwise, I would of had my paycheck direct deposited to their account

Are these top quilts, with an open back, or more like Big Agnes sleeping bags which have a non-insulated back?
