    hammock length/fabric length

When hammock manufacturers state a length, is it before or after the ends are closed? Per RamblinRev, sewn channel needs an extra half a foot of material, binding needs 9", and a knot needs 18" of additional fabric on each end. WB's foot box would probably take extra material.

As I drift towards buying some cuben by the yard or half yard for a hammock body, the answer matters.

Cuben for a hammock is not a good idea...
one thing Cuben has no "Give in it... so it's more like sleeping on a hard surface...
2nd Cuben does not breathe well... so condensation becomes a problem
i know member have make hammocks out of CF but in the end they got away from them due to the reasons i stated above...
figure i would give you the low down befor you dump too much money into your cuben hammock

as for needing 6 inch for the channels it's pretty close... i only needed 2 inch for mine but i made mine pretty small.. but 6 inch is a good size

as for a foot box it's not really hard to make a footbox... i kinda like what WL did with theres using shock cord and cord locks ...
but i would get an extra yard so you have plenty for the footbox ...
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Those figures are extraordinarily rough estimates. They were stated to make sure there is sufficient fabric to do what you want to do. The channel can be any size you want... but let's say an inch to make figures easy. That's two inches for each side of the channel.the double sewn seam on the channel will take up another 1/2" top and bottom. The end should be at least folded on the hem to the tune of another 1/2 inch. That's 3.5 inches per end if all those measurements are totally accurate. So it seems safe to say 6" per end. Whipping uses more fabric in different ways so again 9" is more than enough but IMO not exorbitant.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I usually buy ten feet of fabric, fold it over three inches on each end and sew a triple zig-zag stitch into each end with about a one inch channel. This makes the finished hammock 9' 6" with about two inches of fabric held by three lines of stitching on each end.

One hammock I have has held myself, my wife, and all three daughters at the same time; a combined weight of about 500 lbs.
