Spinn is lighter weight, and less porous than sil (sil will still keep you dry in most circumstances). Sil is much more quiet than spinn. Sil comes in more colors than spinn.

    That's about it.

Oh yeah, spinn is much more expensive.

... but, the cottage guys here who offer Spinn have run in to a problem getting good quality Spinn and so far as I know, it's not available. I have a Spinn tarp and love the lighter weight, tight pitch (doesn't require tensioners like silnylon) and it seems to be getting quieter the more I set it up and take it down. I could also just be imagining things. Caleb, are you in the market for a Spinn tarp?

Here is a video I did of a Big Mamajamba SpinnTex Tarp and there are some side by side comparisons with my silnylon tarp in the video.....rain sound and crinkle test.
    Hope it helps.

I am in the market for a tarp period. I have a hammock and that's it. A DIY project sounds good, but I don't have a stellar project track record. A new mamajamba is sil for $125, found a spinn on here with snake skins and ridge line. Just trying to make an informed decision.

I personally would go with Spinn. Just worth it to me. Good luck and of course, pics of your new purchase!

To answer your specific quesitons, silnylon is silcone impregnated ripstop nylon Spinn UL is silcone impregnate ripstop polyester. SpinnUL is usually lighter weight fabric and since it is polyester based it doesn't stretch like silnylon will.

As someone else pointed out, recent batches of Spinn UL have been problematic with being waterproof that it is no longer being offered by most of the tarp makers here. Jacks R Better has a Spinn UL hex tarp offering.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Brian
