    Gear Hammock Troubles

Everytime I try to use my Grand Trunk Ultralight as a gear hammock either right next to me or underneath me, I've always had things falling out and onto the ground.

What do others in HF do with their gear? Do you use a gear hammock? Please help me solve this problem.

    Thanks!

A couple tricks for a gear hammock.
String it tighter to form a cocoon around the gear.
    Or
Sew on two small loops to the hems, it'll allow a 'biner to hold it closed.

Blackbird has a shelf so I stow most of what I need in there. Food is hung up, the rest stays in the pack under my hammock

i pretty much do what Raul does... but i do have a DIY just jeff pack cover/gear hammock i use once in a blue moon.. works great JRB sells them there really nice ... i hang it off my Whoopie sling next to my hammock so everything is off the ground if it's raining... but most of the time it's on the ground under my hammock..
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I usually hang stuff that needs to dry from the suspension or a small amount of "camo cord" (cheapo braided nylon line) that I bring with for small tasks. Food gets bear bagged and hung, and everything else either goes in the bike's dry bag (if I'm bike camping), or in a mix of my pack (carabinered at the peak of the foot end of my Hennessy; I got the huge model, so it's got enough room for that and me inside), a pair of plastic s-biners hanging from the ridgeline, and the ridgeline mesh gear storage area above my head.

    It's worked well so far.

I made my gear hammock from a pack cover I bought at Walmart for less than $5. It is blue and has cord sewn into the perimeter with cord locks for tightening it around your pack. the cord is exposed on the top and bottom of the cover so I hook a length of cord to the exposed cord on each end of the pack cover and then to each end of the hammock suspension lines. When I put my gear in the suspended cover the weight causes the cord in the cover to tighen around the gear. The gear hammock is suspended by the cord sewn into the pack cover and not the cover itself. Hope this is clear. If not i will be out this weekend and try to take a couple of pictures.

Sounds like a DIY version of this:

I've been thinking of getting one of these gear hammock/pack cover combos. Anyone have one? Any thoughts?

+1 you aren't sitting in it so rake away. I've used this method with a GTUL and it does bring the sides up to form a cocoon as mentioned.

ive had the problem with my gear rolling out of my jrb gear hammock. after reading this thread I think ill be able to figure it out now
Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.

Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......
