Ideas on how to correctly hang

Hi! I'm new to the world of hammocks, and am attempting to do my first hammock on my own I followed knotty's gathered end hammock instructions that are stickied, and have the hammock completely made, and ordered in some polyester webbing (with loops sewn on the ends) for tree straps and have 30' of amsteel from diygearsupply.

Now, I'm a little stuck on how to get the thing hung! Well, I guess I'm more concerned with how to do it correctly. I have an idea to use the 30' of rope as one continuous piece, with the center portion tied to the ends of the hammock to use as a ridgeline, and then simply tie whatever amount I need to the tree straps. (Also, any advice on what type of knots should I use to tie the rope to the tree straps?)

Does this sound like a feasible plan? Or is this simply the ill-advised wanderings of my mind? Sometimes I get ideas in my head that sound like they will work, but don't, so I figured I'd ask the experts! Thanks for any help!

Welcome aboard from Florida. Check out headchange4u's SLS sticky. It's just about what you're describing in your question. I use a system based on it and love it for the simplicity.

I hadn't seen that SLS post before - I guess I should have been looking at the suspension forums (which would have made a lot of sense.. oops). Thanks! I'll give that a shot tonight.

The best advice I can offer is Watch this video by Shug. I doubt you will need any further explainations after them. he's also very entertaining!

Instead of knotting the amsteel, learn to splice it. It's not hard. You can start with a bent piece of wire - guitar strings work; so does computer network cable (untwist some Cat5 and use a single strand with the insulation left on). There are a number of possible configurations with and without ridgelines - check those videos. Good luck!

+ one on the learning to splice. Amsteel is great stuff but by its nature very slippery. Thus you must be very careful in what knots you select for use with it as there is a distinct possibility that they could slip or fail. Trust me I speak from experience on this! For load bearing uses such as hammock suspension splicing is a far superior and safer way to go.
