Wanting to introduce myself to Hammock Forums

Hi there , I'm not new to hiking but new to hammocking.
A few of you might know me from Whiteblaze , but I'll intoduce myself formally for those that don't know me.

I'm John, and have been hiking for many years but have been a ground dweller since ...well , probably my early days camping with my parents.

My interests outside of hiking are : camping , fishing , learning stuff about the great outdoors and nature . Sports and weather are also cool things I'm interested in.

I will be purchasing a hammock with a $200 fathers day gift from my daughter . I received an REI gift card toward purchases there.

I'm planning on going to an REI attic sale the first week in August & another one 2 weeks later with intentions of snaring a hammock in mint condition.

What do you think are my odds ? I would likely add another $100 to my gift card . What else should I get with my money ?

    Thanks.

    hey John,
welcome to Hammock Forums and hey from high point nc.
there is a ton of stuff here to read, learn and ask about.
if it's hammock related it's here or still waiting to be invented.
    hang on and have fun.

just go slow and grow into your own rig. make use of your existing gear that can be adapted to hammock (sleeping bag, tarp etc....)
imo probably the most functional and versatile purchase would be some 7/64 amsteel to make suspensions and other cool stuff. there are several diy threads to help you with the skill needed to make whoopie slings and shackles.

home is where your hammock is.

Welcome sir and enjoy your shopping trip. Make sure you read up on the possible hammmocs REI has fore you go, would hate to have you purchase into one that would taint your experience!

One good way to extend the $200, is to do a quick gathered hammock "Knotty" style (look at sticky post in DIY), and use the $200 for the supplementals. Good Luck!

The best two options for REI (IMHO) are the ENO Doublenest and the Hennessys. If you can get a nice Hennessy for half off, that'd be the way to start (attached bug net). Get the hex tarp, not the asym, if you can & you'll be well on your way...
