Question how much do i need to bury on a locked brummel?

i'm pretty new to the diy scene, and i just made myself a new structural ridgeline out of 7/64 amsteel. i put a locked brummel on each end, but i'm wondering how much do i need to bury the tail? i've got about 4 inches buried on one end and about 2 inches on the other. the closest thing i have to a bury tool is a bobby pin i stole from my wife, which makes the longer bury pretty difficult. can i get by with these lengths? or should i try to do at least 6 inches? (that seems to be the length i saw on all the instructions for how to do a locked brummel) any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

More experienced guys will chime in but I think your buries are pretty short.

I know it's not likely for that bury to come out but I do mine 6". It would likely be safe enough to put a few stitches in the bury to secure it, but, well you know, it's your head...

btw, any old piece of thin wire will make a fine bury tool for 7/64. Floral wire is fine.

as far as I know, the bury is purely cosmetic on a locked brummel.
Although it does hide the tail so it does not get in your way.

I have used them with no bury with no problems before.

IMO, as long as it stays out of your way, it is good to go.

It's the bury that does the work when the line is under tension; the locking part at the loop is primarily to keep the bury from slipping out with movement when the line is loose. It may contribute to the tensile strength, but don't count on it without derating the line significantly.

I go three or four inches on locked brummels.

In 7/64 with a locked brummel the correct bury length is 4.5" (rounded down to the nearest hundredth). And the brummel will carry some of the load, thats why its shorter compared to a plain stitched bury.

That being said, if its only for a SRL, I bet you could get away with 2" buries.

I was going to ask if it was for the end of a whoopie or for a ridgeline? Opie tells it as it is.

It's hard to argue with Opie.

But for myself if I wasn't able to bury atleast 4 inch, after double splicing the line, I would run some stiching through the bury to help secure it. I'm not paranoid of falling, I just have a very healthy respect for gravity.

Suffering a 20 foot fall and nearly breaking your back does that.
