    Webbing Failure

I debated even posting this. While camping this weekend I had a critical failure. One of my tree straps broke. The strap literally ripped apart and I hit my butt on the ground. It wasn't a failure in the stitching. It was a strap from one of our cottage guys here. Luckily I had a back up strap so it didn't ruin my camping trip. But It did make me very wary and nervous the whole rest of the trip. If you can't trust straps from the cottage guys, what straps can you trust?
If you don't try due to fear of failure you've already failed due to fear.

That seems like a pretty random failure IMHO. Did you inspect the webbing before hanging for nicks/cuts? Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it is your fault, just asking questions.

hum interesting, I would suggest contacting the cottage maker and informing them as well as possibly sending them the defective strap. Whenever I have had any problems with cottage industries they have always fixed the problem above and beyond any thing I could of ever expected.

I would be interested to see it if you have any pictures. I've been using webbing from cottage and major companies, never had a problem. I hear constantly how most of our cottage folk are trying to source better and more consistent materials. If anything I like the feel of the cottage webbing more than my old ENO webbings. Not saying it's your fault or anything, but we should investigate further.

Thanks for not mentioning the manufacturer before you gave him a chance to check it out - that's how it should be done.

Too many possibilities/assumptions/wags to respond to your specific issue, so let the manufacturer check it out then report back - it may prevent a failure for someone else.

    How very strange ?
I can't see why it would be a bad thing to post about it ?

Was it 1 inch webbing ?
Do you have any pictures of the ripped webbing ?
    Where did it rip ?
Could the webbing have been caught by your biner and that caused the ripp?
I hope you don't mind me asking this (not that it should matter) what do you weight ?
Was it any dynamic involved (where you jumping of joy in your hammock) ?

And most important, did you hurt yourself ?

When you buy large rolls of webbing, normally 300 foot rolls, there are sometimes splices which could be the failure mode. If the vendor does not replace the strap(s) let me know, I have extra material that I could make you some. The splice should still maintain the loading rate. Could you give details on your setup?

It was 1 inch webbing. I don't take technology with me into the woods, so I have no picture. I actually threw the broken strap away. It ripped when my gf sat down in the hammock I was already sitting in. We hit the ground together. I weigh 185lbs and she is 116lbs. The strap is rated for 700lbs according to distributor's website. Also it was a pine tree with some real rough bark.

The strap did have some worn edges due to it rubbing in the Dutch Clip (I know this is supposed to be a no-go, but it does and I can put pics of my other strap to prove it). I had thought that was where it snapped, but when I put the two pieces together they didn't fit all the way around the tree. This makes me think there was a third, middle piece that I didn't find, but how it could have ripped in two places at the same time is beyond me.

This is the second such failure to be reported in a relatively short time. I don't remember where the other one was posted but it was within the last month or so. I remember we wrote it off as a quirk.

In fact two failures reported out of the many hours of use they get may still be quirky but it is enough to wonder.. perhaps there is a bad shipment of webbing from the distributor to the vendor.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Two people is too much!!! It happened here just recently. If it's the black webbing, then yea it can break when someone else piles in the hammock with you, especially if its worn. For two people, you have to have something more robust than typical cottage ultralight webbing.
I have pissed my girlfriend off several times because I refuse to let her in my hammock with me. She's not going to ruin my tree straps.
