    -10 and below Weather

Howdy folks. I am a winter hiking fanatic. I might need to go to a WHA meeting, but that's a different topic. So I have a few questions, and I have watched shug;s videos on his winter excursions. But since I will only have 1 underquilt here are a few questions.

I am a recent hammock convert. I am going to be buying a winter incubator from hammockgear here soon, but was wondering how most deal with the -10 to -40F range . On the ground i would juse use a ccf, a prolite plus and a space blanket in a bivy.

So in the hammock world, with a winter incubator, what else would I need to do to comfortably be able to survive say -25 to -30 temps on average?

I was thinking the winter incubator(still trying to decide b/w full length and 3/4) plus a walmart blue ccf pad and one of those rei heavy duty space blankets might work. Other ideas were the incubator, plrolite 4.

It is too hot to even think about trying it right now, but I am pondering using my military goretex bivy as a peapod type thing, which I figure would add a decent amount of warmth. Now with doing that, i assume the underquilt would go on last, ie on the outside of the bivy?

And lastly, i have heard the gossamer gear pads are much more comfortable and pack down much easier. Was thinking of picking up a 1/4 wide one for winter hammock use. Would this be a better choice than the walmart blue ccf? or are they comparable?

Did some Pod style in the sub 0º and had terrific success. This will be my extreme winter set-up from now on.

Pod style only works on hammocks with out attached bug nets right? Any suggestions on how to take a WBBB down to that low of a temperature and stay toasty warm?

First: I haven't tried it so consider this a brainfart: But if you pull back the bug netting to one side(and don't use the tieouts), it shouldn't really be an issue - it almost has the same profile as the Traveler.

You might be right, but wouldn't the RL get in the way of the Pod? I have not tried to do this yet but, I know that if I tried to use my -20* winter bag as a pod, it would not fit over the RL.

Use a winter UQ and pad or two to supplement.....I have done that.
I would still put my down parka over my feet.....it works wonders. Easy to do with the netting thrown back.
Or....use double UQs. Stack a 3 season with a winter one.

I'm about to watch Shug's video to see what he's using. But I've been down to -15 below with a Winter Incubator with a couple extra oz of 900 fill, and a Warbonnet Winter Top Quilt, plus I kept my down jacket and insulated pants on. I took my boots off and put on some fresh, thick wool socks and I was fine.

But you're talking -30 to -40! Cripes! IMHO, every 15 degrees is a whole different world, and you're clearly a big step colder than what I did (And plan to do again)

I haven't been much below -30°(f), but I don't do that much extra special. I do carry fleece with me on winter trips and generally use it for layering in the hammock. I also suck it up and bring the foot pad for below my feet when it's really cold out, otherwise I just throw my pack under my legs in the hammock. I have a more difficult time staying warm when I'm not in the hammock, but once in the hammock with my hot water bottle between the legs, winter quilt full of down goodness on top and my winter yeti below; it's allllllll gooooooood.

In full disclosure, -30° out here doesn't quite feel the same as -30° in areas that have this mysterious thing called "humidity". It is much easier to stay warm without the moisture in the air...much easier!

I believe you just zip it "under" the RL, my mate BlazeAway is using this setup(Traveler + Polarpod). So it's possible - but i don't know the details

It works just like you are saying. Nothing difficult or special about it.
