I love hanging on the top of Standing Indian. If you follow the ridge a short ways past the clearing, you will find a path obscured by rhododendrons that leads out to a rock outcropping with 180 deg views. One of the best sunsets in the region.

I had considered hanging on top of Standing Indian, but decided to push on down to the shelter so I would be closer to Deep Gap for my linkup with Hooch. That day definitely took a lot out of me even though it was only about 12 miles.

Thanks Bearpaw, your reports are great. However it kills me knowing those trails are a good 8 hours away from me and are some of my favorite.

Great report. I did that loop going in the other direction w/ two friends once. That trip seams to register in my mind as the best & most memorable backpacking trip I've done.

I know what you mean! I hiked from Standing Indian to Big Springs one day. Going up the back side of Albert after doing 12 miles was a killer. It's worth it up there though as this really is one of my favorite hikes. I always stop at the Dillard House in Dillard Ga. on the way back. Just makes the trip even more exceptional. Really nice pics you took, thanks for sharing.
