Tarps, Hammocks and what? Cannons !!!

    Sailors use hammocks!!!

Last October a good friend of mine got married in Baltimore Maryland. While there I visited the "Constellation” Baltimore Maritime Museum on the Inner Harbor. If you have not ever been, IMO a must see!

Baltimore's "Constellation" (Tall Ship) was commissioned in 1855; the U.S.S. Constellation was the last all-sail ship built by the United States Navy. Today the historic vessel lies at anchor (figuratively speaking) in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, where visitors can climb aboard and get a firsthand look at what the life of a sailor was like in days past.

The crew berthing area (basically just hammocks strung from the rafters of the gun deck) onboard the USS Constellation, a wooden-hulled sloop-of-war that served in the U.S. Navy from 1854-1933 and 1940-1955. It's now a museum ship in Baltimore, Maryland.
Huge tarp, lots of hammocks and Cannons!

    See Pics:
Big O’l Tarp on ships aft deck protecting sailors from sun and elements.
Canvas hammocks made from sails for sailors to sleep on.
Sick Bay had a bridge type hammock
    And yes CANNONS!

nice pics. Saw that boat sitting in the harbor. I should have went on. Looks really neat. Must have been crazy to be a sailor in one of those things. Makes me think of the days of Christopher Columbus, and possibly before, when they sail west not knowing what they were going to run in to. Pretty ballsy. And pirates!

I would not want to lug that tarp around!

Ahhh! The sweet smell of gunpowder in the morning! Great pics! Hammocks would be perfect with pitching and rolling of the ship, sure beats rolling out of a bed.

Looks like the US Navy gave its sailors a lot more space between hammocks than the British did.

    Thanks for the pics.

Here in Inddiana,,,as I live in the wooded hills of southern Indiana 1 mile from the fence of Crane Naval Storage Depot..they have a section of woods,,that they take care of that grows white oak trees more than 30" dia. and about 150-200 ft tall,,that they occasionally cut,,that section of woods is called the Constellation Woods,,as those trees are used only for that ship,,all its decking, and planking, and anything else they use to refurbish it. I have been in the woods and its like walking thru old growth forests up and down the hills,,about 150 acres of the most pristine woods you would ever want to see. The base protects those trees just for that ship. Just thought I would throw that tidbit of info,,as I really think its kinda neat in a way.

Deadphans, Wished you could have made the tour, I'm sure you would have enjoyed it. . Yes Agreed, It must have been crazy to be a sailor from back in the past. Glad I was able to dig into a little American History. Alot to see a learn about in Baltimore.

Me too, I rang the bell (was LOUD too) and got yelled at! Suppose to wear clean white gloves when you do it. Gotta say it was shinier than a Brand New Penny.

Interesting note, the bell was rung for changes of the sailors shifts.
