It was a different world then. Being a history major from the Naval Academy, I got the chance to live some of the bits of history involved.
Most common reason for death in that age: illness from lousy nutrition.
Most common battle-related death: infection/gangrene from splinters after a cannon ball hit the outer bulkhead and exploded the wood.
Marines spent at least as much time fighting aboard ship as on shore.
It was the time when ships were wood and men were iron.
