I have a nice original Speer 4x4 SPE (Segmented Pad Extender) for sale. It is used to extend a standard 20" sleeping pad with up to four 5"x20" CCF pads, cut from your blue foam pad (not included), so your shoulders and hips are insulated. It can be used with just 2 pads or whatever combination works for you. It has a mesh insert down the back to help keep it from slipping. No longer made, in excellent condition, 4.6oz. $40 including shipping to US addresses and PayPal fees.

That is a great product, IMO, assuming a person is going to use pad. I think I actually prefer it for pad use over a dbl layer hammock, with the possible exception of the JRB Bridge. And might even save you some weight, depending of course on the fabric weight added by adding a double layer. I loved being able to stack pads of various thickness with the SPE, thicker under the torso only and as thick as you might need. To bad- when Speer went out of business to do other things- that no one picked this up for manufacture. I guess there are just not enough folks using pads to make it worth fooling with.

Hey BillyBob. I've been curious about the SPE for a long time so I'm pretty excited about snagging this. A 2x2 was more of what I was hoping to try but this will do for sure. I'm one of the odd hangers that actually don't mind CCF's because I can multipurpose them and in my opinion they work, and are not that uncomfortable. I have a Yeti but I still use various CCF's without issues. Anyway, winter will be here before we know it so the timing is just right.

In that case, you are THE MAN for the SPE. Personally, I seem to use up most of that 4x4, never wanted it smaller, though maybe I could have got by. The weight saved is pretty miniscule, so why not just have the 4x4 is what I figured. case!

I have really only used it once. One Thermarest Ridgerest full length CCF pad with one TR inflatable Ultralight torso length stacked on top of it. Neither one really meant for winter in a hammock. Plus some cut up WM blue pads in the wings. I was major toasty at ~ 18F, never had a warmer winter night in a hammock. I was also more than comfy enough, even if maybe not quite as comfy as without a pad. And everything stayed right where I had put it.

Keep us posted how it works for you in severe cold!
