I normally try to do at least 6" bury,,,I have done alittle less,,but more is safer and works great.

It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Also... For anyone wanting to do the math... It looks like this...

    1 / 8 x 42 for a locked brummel fixed eye

    1 / 8 x 63 for a stitched fixed eye

    1 / 8 x 73.5 for the adjustable eye

You would do the same for any of the sizes by replacing the first part of the equation with the size you are working on.

Thank you everybody. It looks like ~9 1/4 in for the slider and 8 in for the eye but taper the end 2 5/8 in. These are rounded up numbers as a little more bury is good. If I'm missing something please comment. ;-)

I do a 10" bury, but in order to get that I mark 12" on the line. You lose some length in the bury process, just from expansion of the outer line. Might be more than I need but it sure doesn't slip!

Ditto. I hate that slipping feeling. I'm too old to bounce!

For those who haven't spliced: The length lost in the bury process is not in the bury, but in the part of the line in which the bury is ........buried. So, if you are splicing with a fid or by pulling, the exit point from the process should be at a mark beyond the length of the buried portion. As hppyfngy notes, in order to make place for the bury, some line will expand a remarkable amount. Which is to say, it will have bunched up a remarkable amount, too. Exiting too far is no problem, because as you pull on and smooth the bunched cover, the exposed end of the bury will retreat into the cover.
