7/64'' amsteel strength?

Would it be safe to hang a hammocker weighing 350lbs using 7/64'' soft shackles?

yes the Amsteel will hold that weight... but a soft shackle uses a knot and burry
so the knot will be the weak point in the shackle if i remember ..

If the knot is well set so it is hard as a little rock and there is plenty of tail still showing and it has been tested with a hammer head and a screwdriver twisted in the closed loop to to test it, and the loop closes down well on the line, then I might face a moral crisis in betting large sums on failure in the rope from Home Depot instead.

But, seriously, the well-made soft shackle might have a breaking strength that exceeds by 50% the breaking strength of the rope it is made of. That is what some report in destructive testing, anyway.

But be honest with yourself. The 350 pounder has half the margin of safety of people, who average less than half that weight.

And, I'll tell you; soft shackles out of larger Amsteel, say 1/4 inch, just FEEL wonderful in the hand, even if at that size, weight, and expense, you might be well off with a stock, rated carabiner instead.

Another point of issue is where the knot is placed while the shackle is in use. If it is located midway in one of the legs, it is under the same law of physics in that the load will be equally split between the 2 legs. So while the knot may derate the strength of the line by 50% as Demo stated, the leg it is in is only carrying half of the total load anyway.

Ive mathed the Diamond knot down to a 30% derate in Amsteel Blue.

I've hung on 7/64 and it was fine, I weigh in just at 300...

I did just upgrade to some 1/8 whoopies, and shackles but my SRL is still 7/64. I changed them out because I liked the extra strength and they are sexy black(well dark gray that black amsteel is). It was just a mental thing, I'm sure the 7/64 stuff was just fine.

My setup is a 6in long 1/8" shackle through the sewn end of the hammock and the fixed end of the whoopie on the shackle. Its a tight fit, but it fits perfectly. Then my SRL is attached to the woopie loop with another 7/64 shackle. It all hangs very secure, no worries at all with those 1/8 shackles, they are crazy strong. I used to use climbing carabiners, but I'm sold on these soft shackles for this type of stuff.

I'm still learning all this stuff as well, i've only spent a short amount of time in my hammock, but it was all fun so far. This place is a GREAT source of information, glad its around. I got the hammock to use when out fishing the creeks and streams here in AZ. Makes for a nice rest mid day, and lets me backpack in much lighter without the tent and pad for sure for the overnighters.

I weigh 305 and use 7/64 whoopies without issue. Made them myself. :-)

I did a test and snapped a cheapo braided poly rope at around 1000 pounds in the hammock. So figure half of that is 500 pounds. I would have no problem using any amsteel or dynaglide, if I ever get any.

Ok, now let me ask this. Is it really needed to bury the standing end back into the constrictor part? couldnt you just do the straight eye bury, and snip the ends evenly, then do the end knot? Ive done that with some mason line soft shackles.
