Many people do not realize the array of different positions there are to lay in a hammock. Each position provides a different level of support and feel.

1) Traditional
This is how the common person thinks of laying in a hammock. A lot of us grew up watching this method on the TV sitcom Gilligans Island. This is the easiest method to lay in a hammock that has a spreader bar. Sidenote: Spreader bar hammocks are the easiest to fall out of, as Gilligan did many times.

2) Diagonal (Brazillian)
This is a more comfortable method. Different feels can be achieved by altering the angles and by bringing in one leg instead of having them both stretched out.

3) Crossways
This is the swinging position. If you have never swung in a hammock, then you are missing out on half the fun! It is easier to get a good swing going if you have a separate rope to pull on that is anchored to an object a few feet away. Larger hammocks allow laying crossways easier because there is more material to span from head to toe. If there is enough play in the hammock, tie a knot in the middle of one edge and it will act as a back support for sitting crossways, like a big hammock chair.
