This idea was borrowed from Tony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53mJWMxSI_8).
When I watched his youTube video, I thought it was a terrific concept: An underquilt that could also be warn as a vest. I tried a normal down vest similar to his, but it was way too small. Didn't cover butt and shoulders at once. I know Jacks R Better have wearable quilts. But they look like you cinched a sleeping bag around yourself. Plus they're pricey. I was looking for a cheap alternative and wanted to try a first DIY project.
This is my first attempt sewing. I learned a lot. But my first few stitches are rough. After a while though, I finally got the hang of it. I'm sure if I did this again I could make it prettier. But this one is functional, which is the most important thing. I was thinking if I try another similar project, I would start with one of those knee length women's down jackets, as this one is a bit small.
So here's the story: I went to Salvation Army in search of a down coat to turn into an underquilt. When I found this monster, I knew I hit paydirt. 3XL and camo. Score!
I cut the sleeves off and sewed in zippers. Then I ran a channel for shock cords. It works pretty well on my WBBB.
And the best part is that it can still be worn as a vest!
